Hockey Stick Flex Guide
How Much Flex is Right for You?
Stick flex affects shot power, release speed, and puck feel. It’s measured by how many pounds of force it takes to bend the stick one inch.
What the Numbers Mean
A flex rating (like 85, 95, 100) tells you how stiff the stick is.
- Lower number = more whip
- Higher number = stiffer stick
Choosing the Right Flex
General rule: Your weight (in lbs) ÷ 2 = Ideal flex.
But also consider:
- Position: Forwards often go lower flex for quick release. Defensemen might prefer higher for slapshots.
- Play style: Wrist shot/sniper = more whip (lower flex). Power shooter = stiffer (higher flex).
- Cut length: Cutting a stick makes it stiffer — every inch removed = ~5 flex points added.
Flex Recommendation Table
| Player Weight | Suggested Flex |
|---|---|
| Under 130 lbs | 40-60 Flex |
| 130-160 lbs | 65-75 Flex |
| 160-190 lbs | 80-90 Flex |
| 190+ lbs | 95-110+ Flex |
